 | | Winter in the west at Ski Banff-Lake Louise-Sunshine |
When your plane lands in Alberta at Calgary International Airport, the incredible Canadian Rocky Mountains are already visible. An easy 90 minute drive (or shuttle ride) takes you straight into Banff. Almost without fail you will see elk, deer or mountain goats sometime during your stay - a perk of vacationing in Canada's first national park.
The ability to ski in not only a national park but also a United Nations World Heritage site is an opportunity not found anywhere else in the world. The three ski resorts in the area - Ski Norquay, Lake Louise Mountain Resort and Sunshine Village - have been working collaboratively for 30 years through a partnership called Ski Banff-Lake Louise-Sunshine to limit their environmental footprint and maintain a National Park-friendly focus.
Together the resorts have combined terrain of over 7,700 acres and offer more than 270 incredibly scenic runs that cater to every single skill level. It doesn't matter how many years you have been skiing; the magnitude and beauty of these mountains will take your breath away.
The Rockies are warmer than you may think. January is generally considered the coldest month with average temperatures of -7 C. The weather is dry in Alberta contributing to our famous champagne powder snow.

Evenings after a day on the hill are perfect for window shopping or experiencing the dining and culture Banff is known for. Banff is pedestrian friendly and easily accessible from over 100 hotels, motels and bed & breakfast accommodations in the area. Being in a National Park, development is closely monitored so there are no condo developments and all buildings must be three stories or under to provide visitors and locals alike with an unrestricted view of the mountains. It doesn't hurt that unlike most ski resorts, the ski season is low season in Banff.

Accommodation is cheaper and with over 150 restaurants, pubs and clubs and over 200 unique shops, the après scene is interesting to say the least. From gourmet Five Diamond cuisine at The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel to local artisan cafes, it takes days to sample the assortment of restaurants in the area. Savour renowned AAA Alberta Angus beef at specialty steak houses such as The Saltlik, The Keg, and local favourite, Bumper's Beef House. Also try the Grizzly House with an incredible variety of fondues and the Maple Leaf for contemporary Canadian fare.
The locals are gracious and friendly, ask their opinion of what to see and do for a candid taste of the area.
With the snow and slopes to keep you busy all day and the shops, restaurants, spas, theatre and nightlife to keep things interesting après - the perfect ski vacation is just a quick jump over the Atlantic.
