The word on the street is that skiing in Germany is underrated. If you think about skiing in Europe, it doesn't immediately spring to mind, but it probably should.

Germany's borders with Austria and Switzerland sit on the Alps and they provide some great, easily accessible ski resorts that are often overlooked. Among those in the know, Germany's ski resorts have a good reputation for being consistently efficient with high levels of service.
The resorts are mainly 'pretty-pretty' mountain villages, surrounded by lots of tree-lined slopes, adding to their charm. The slopes are quiet in the week, but BMWs full of weekenders arrive in hordes on Fridays and Saturdays and the mountains get much busier. As does the nightlife, fuelled by Germany's world-class beer...

| There could be problems with snow though – Germany doesn't have any major mountains, so the resorts are all a little low to guarantee powder for the whole season. There is also the other little problem of small ski areas – Germany pales in comparison with 'I-like-my-ski-areas-big' France. But let's not forget that big is not always better…
A major plus is the accessibility of the place. The international airport of Munich is close to all the main ski areas, plus most have their own train stations and are handy to get to from France, Switzerland and Austria. It's well worth visiting for a family holiday – the childcare is reputedly pretty good, too. |
